Constipation Woes

The test provides useful information regarding changes in myoelectrical activity of the sphincter during squeezing and bearing down. Results help confirm a diagnosis of obstructive defecation or damaged anal sphincter.Simulated defecation test consists of placing a 50-mL water-filled balloon or a silicone-filled artificial stool (Fecom) in the rectum. The patient is given privacy and asked to expel the artificial stool. Difficulty in expelling it or an inability to do so is a characteristic finding in patients with obstructive defecation.
