Stem Cell Ethical Concerns

November 21st, 2007 | by admin |

Those with ethical concerns about embryonic stem cellsresearch have far less objections to umbilical cord blood stem cells. This is because the umbilical cord blood is not harvested until the child is born through natural means. The harvesting of the umbilical cord blood does not harm the newborn child.

At the time of birth the umbilical cord is clamped as normal. The doctor, or in some cases the father, cuts the cord. This is all part of the regular birth process. Once the cord is separated from the child, the medical staff then collects the blood from the umbilical cord. The blood is either reserved in a private family cord blood bank or in a public cord blood bank.
