What Happens Prior To And During Surgery?

First, an IV is placed in your arm in order to prepare you for hip replacement surgery. Inside the operating room, a urinary catheter will be inserted. An incision will be made over the side of your hip. The femur will then be cut and replaced with the new metal ball and stem. Cement may or may not be used to fix the component into place. A new socket will be joined to the ball. When the fixation is just right the doctor will clean the incision and close and dress it. There will also be tubes coming out of the hip after replacement to drain any excess fluid.
